NEVER use the word ‘committed suicide’!

The phrase ‘committed suicide’ is seriously problematic because it implies the act of suicide is a crime or a sin. This implication increases the barriers to talking openly about it. Whenever we talk about suicide, the focus should be on the underlying mental health or emotional issues rather than any kind of ‘moral failure’ or ‘crime’ on the part of the person.

What vocabulary can we use instead?

‘Died by suicide’ is a better way to report deaths by suicide as it de-stigmatizes the conversation around suicide.
